How do you hook up a dvd player to a dvd recorder to record dvds?

I am trying to hook up my dvd player to my dvd recorder and I can’t get it to work! I already tried hooking the dvd player “out” to the recorder “in” and the recorder “out” to the tv’s “in” but when I push play on the dvd player and record on the dvd player, it says “no signal”. Please help! I’m getting so frustrated!

The recorder can detect that the problem will not let you are finding out copying dvds is illegal anyway.
